About the Natural Resources Department The East Hampton Town Natural Resources Department was created in 1981. East Hampton is the only town in the state of New York with a Natural Resources Department. The goals of the department are to monitor and protect the natural resources found within the Town of East Hampton. Protection of our wildlife, our groundwater, our upland and our wetland habitats is critical. Everything that we do to our land (public and privately owned) in East Hampton affects our groundwater and eventually impacts our harbors and bays. The Natural Resources Department applies for grants to help underwrite Town of East Hampton environmental projects including wetland restoration, open marsh water management, finfish stocking and the replanting of disturbed upland habitats with native vegetation. The department also applies for, and obtains permits, from state and/or federal agencies needed for town projects that help the environment. The department is actively involved in the remediation of environmental Town Code violations, particularly, those involving overclearing and the clearing of wetlands and protected habitats. Lastly, the department manages about 3,000 acres of Town nature preserves. Larry Penny has been the Environmental Protection Director since 1983.
